Need Help! 2001 LS 430 -P0442 code
Hello guys.. I wish I could post up pics of my new (well new to me) 2001 LS 430, but an 30 mins after buying the car, the Check engine light came on and this afternoon the CEL started to flash and the car started to misfire. The abs light also came on as well as another "initials" light, I dont remember what it was, im just so disappointed, i dont even want to look at the car, but I have to fix it... Do you guys have any idea what it could be? I stopped at an autozone to have it scanned, but the obd port was not wanting to communicate, it had power, just didn't want to talk to the scanner! Guy pulled it off when inside and connected it to his computer to dl whatever it might have picked up and it downloaded a P0442 code. Guys please help me figure this out, I would hate to spend on a mechanic for a car that gave me all of 17 miles before sinking my heart.. O have been looking for an LS 400 for 3 months and when I saw this LS 430, well, i liked it! Especially since I cant find an unmolested version for a decent price. Anyway, thanks for hearing me out.. The other scenario around is you to face it and start fixing whatever is wrong, start off by removing your battery terminal for like 5 minutes to reset the ECU, then re-check if the errors are all still showing.. P0442 code is an EVAP leak somewhere, I know 3 places that you can check for yourself first.
1. it could be as simple as the gas cap leaking or not tightened properly (just ensure to rotate it till it clicks).
2. maybe a leaking hose, Remove the V cover, you will find the EVAP hoses on the right side on the left of the ABS unit.
3. The fuel canister, which will be the worst/costy probability, start smelling below the gas tank for any fresh/raw gas smell.
- ABS light can come on if there is leak in any of brake fluid hoses, or the brake fluid level is low.

There is more than one issue going on. The p0442 code is a leak in the evaporative emissions. Usually caused by a loose gas cap or one of the rubber lines on the driver's side of the engine. It is normal for the check engine, red triangle with an exclamation point, and the check VSC lights to all come on at once. This code shouldn't affect driveability.
When the check engine light flashes that means the computer has detected a severe misfire and damage to the catalytic converter is eminent if you continue driving. There should be a different code in the computer for this issue.

Agree.. you should have more than one code... or have you checked the battery? A low battery, not providing sufficient power to the ECU will cause a hole host of issues that don't seem to be related. Check the battery and the alternator to make sure they are working properly.
This is Texas in the summer and the heat can kill a battery, especially if the car is not driven regularly.

Sorry about your issues. You may need to bite the bullet and find a reliable trustworthy independent mechanic to help you to resolve or at least inform you of what your issues are. It might be too much for you and someone knowledgeable should be able to sort things out. Ask around who your friends use. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I cant stand people who do this to other people just to try and sell a car , I know exactly what this guy did , he cleared the check engine light right before he sold the car , then this poor guy came along bought the car drove it for a while and bang there goes the light , I agree take that car back and get your money !!Hopefully you didn't sign a bill of sale that stated "As is condition" was he private or a dealer ?
I bought my LS from a new car dealership, and "assumed" they wouldn't do that. Then again, there was a 1 mo./1000k warranty. But private party you bet I am hooking up.

Remain calm. Check your gas cap and see if it's tightened or the o-ring is worn out. If not it could be one of the other things. In any case it's probably not going to be a major issue. You could also clear the code it and see if it comes back. If you get a "CHECK VSC" it pops up when you get other problem codes, it's not necessarily anything wrong with the vehicle stability control system.
