Default 05 - Trunk Leak

Got my 05 in May. Found that the trunk was popping along with the gas cap when it rains heavy. After troubleshooting found that water is accumulating in the trunk reservoir in which the fuse box is located, getting the box wet and making some electronics act up. After shop vac and drying out everything went back to normal. Continues to happen every time there is a heavy rain. Love the car other than this, hopefully I can get it shored up.

Does anyone know where this leak could come from? Possibly a loose tail light on drivers side or something in the wheel well allowing water in?

Thanks,
KC

There's at least one drain plug in the bottom of the tire well, not to mention the tail light assemblies. I would check to make sure the plug is in tact, the tail lights are installed tightly and I would even go as far as to crawl inside the trunk, close the lid and have someone run water around the periphery of the trunk lid gap to see if there's any water coming in through the top.

I may have to crawl in the trunk. The water is only in the reservoir which houses the trunk fuse box, reading that it could also be a leaking sunroof drain pipe so may have to run water on that too.

Yeah can see the story now: "LS owner found locked in the trunk of his own car at the local Walmart. Fortunately the driver of the car in the next slot heard the banging and yelling. The luxury car was unlocked. Cindy climbed in. She couldn't believe how nice the inside was. Considered stealing it because the key was in the ignition. Of course, the owner was in the trunk. So she found the trunk opener. Click. Al, the owner, climbed out of the trunk slowly. He kept insisting that he was doing a leak test. That, with him in the trunk, a so called friend had driven the car 50 miles to the parking lot and left it. That riding in the trunk was really quite comfortable. Cindy called 911 and ran".

Hahahaha.

Fortunately, all of our cars have that mandated trunk release lever inside of the trunk to prevent this from happening.

Not only that, but the trunk handle is illuminated to help the trappee fomd their way out. Really, why is this a problem that Lexus provided an answer for?

I might be splitting hairs here, but is it illuminated? I was under the impression that it was just a glow-in-the-dark piece of plastic

Are you asking why did Lexus put a handle inside the trunk? Or why did they illuminate it/make it glow-in-the-dark?
