From personal experience at the shop, always use a factory cap/ $20 at the dealer is worth is! And yes, your gas cap has lost its sealing properties.

If the code reader is OBDII compliant it should have no problem reading the codes. Most are, unless they're really old...

Today I went to fill up my car and the gas cap clicked. I don't know why didn't earlier, maybe I wasn't turning hard enough? I don't know. When do you think the check engine light should go off if the gas cap is indeed the culprit? I've driven 30 miles.

It may store in memory as an EVAP code. Generally, 55 Miles is enough. This can vary. Get a code reader or detach negative battery cable. Or buy an electric car.

Did you get a free error read-out from Autozone? You should hear a click when the cap is tightened and if you keep turning, you hear more clicks.
The check engine light happened to my 02 LS once and lexus replaced the oxygen sensor (if I remembered correctly approx $350 two yrs ago).

In my case, the cap seems still functional (although it is likely to the culprit for most cases according to my service advisor).

I don't know for sure, exactly what the system needs to clear the code, if the code was caused by the gas cap, but I'd guess at least 2 full cycles of hot/cold soaks. In other words, 2 separate times the engine reaches the normal operating temperature, and 2x the engine is able to fully be classified as "cold."

If it doesn't clear after a couple days of driving, I might have lost this bet with bloom, of what was causing the code.

Have you taken the car to Autozone or a place that does a free OBD2 scan, so they can tell you what code is lighting up your check engine light?

Checked both caps and neither one clicked. Both appear to be original OEM units, so I bought two new OEMs on eBay for both of our cars.

Both click now. The GX460 clicks one time, the LS430 clicks multiple times. $22 each on eBay for OEM units.
