Default Is it possible for the smart key to run out of battery while driving?

Is this possible? If so, what would happen, would the car shut off?

It's possible for the key to be 100% dead, but you'd know in advance I'm sure, by lock/unlock not working reliably, and also I think the dash/info screen will TELL you "key battery is low" and then the dreaded, "key is not detected" message on the display.

Will the car shutoff if you're driving? No. As a matter of fact, you could start the car, throw the key out the window and then drive to Mexico! As long as YOU don't shut the car off, once it's running, you literally don't need the key to drive it.

In the unlikely case you drive to Mexico WITH the key, and the fob is completely dead when you arrived in Mexico, don't panic. Take a couple sips of a pina colada or a big gulp of some horchata, then take the key out of your pocket, and insert the beveled/pointed end into the ignition, like a big plastic key, and turn & start! You'll be off to your next destination!

The beveled end starts the car without the battery? Couldn't a thief just break into a car and start the car with a replica?

Not sure, but if a thief 'breaks into' the LS, it sounds as if you locked the car. If the locked car is broken into (window smashed/door pried/etc), the car's security system will prevent the car from starting.

Why don't you buy an empty shell/fob from ebay, then lock your LS with driver's window down, and wait for the security system to activate, then--while standing outside your LS, reach in through the window and unlock the driver's door and open it. Get into the car and place your Ebay keyfob beveled edge into the ignition and try to start. Take lots of pictures too. A video would be even better.

Just don't do this after sundown, and be aware to NOT have the good/operational smartkey/keyfob within 20' of your LS! Also, make sure you have your ID and proof of ownership handy!!!

If sign of low battery is ignored. Then immobilizer won't let the car start. Use the key open the door and put the fob on top of push button
to start the engine like owner's manual says. You'll know when fob battery is getting too weak.

Just start the car then remove the battery from the fob and take a short drive. As long as you dont turn off the engine it will run,but it will not start again until you insert the fob in the ignition and turn it.
