What about only filling up your car like 1/2 to 3/4 of the way and trying that for a several fill ups and seeing if the gas smell goes away for a while?

It could be something like the gas pump where you normally fill up, goes longer than it should. I just know I had a specific situation where that I referenced above where someone else was driving the car and overfilled it and the car stunk up my garage for a while. I ended up having to hose it down around the area where you fill until the smell started finally going away. But it was 100% from that incident, never had the issue since.

What I find peculiar is that there is no smell until the car is fully warmed up. I would assume if it were coming from a pressurized line it would definitely be noticed when cold and it would smell immediately. Being that it's only noticeable after any longer drive leads me to believe its coming from the emissions system so I most likely am smelling fumes rather than raw gas. Regardless I still have to find it. I spoke with shop foreman at Lexus and was told if smoke test doesn't locate it he doesn't have an answer. I may try another dealership.

Did you replace the gas cap with a new OEM cap?

No, but smell is coming from front of car/engine compartment area. Do you think the gas cap is not doing what it is supposed to do with the emissions system? The other problem is that no engine warning lights or codes come up.

I would replace it. I'm not one to throw parts at something but I could see that possibly being a factor. Modern gas caps have a valve that allows a certain pressure equilization without letting too many fumes out of the cap and allow a car to to have evaporative emissions control that come off the gas inside the tank. If that valve wasn't working properly or the cap wasn't closing properly I could something malfunctioning. I know when I get my emissions test done they actually test my gas cap with some sort of vacuum device. Usually though it should throw a code if it wasn't working properly.

I had a Lexus cap on a different car I replaced as the threads had just gotten so mangled over the years it wasn't latching properly.

I can't guarantee anything but if I was in your shoes I would probably throw a new cap on there as it's a pretty cheap part.

Having a gas smell in a 430 doesn't sound pleasant. Local Lex dealer cost is 150/hr. If it's 30 minutes to diagnose, seems like a good investment

Thanks for the imput.....but the smell has never been inside the car. It's only after a longer drive when I get out after parked or when I pull into my garage I can smell it after the garage door closes. Never inside or I couldn't tolerate it. Gas cap replacement sounds sensible for 20+ bucks. My Indy who checked the car out for quite a long time with the smoke test couldn't find anything and said not the cap or it would have set off a code or light.....but I might just change anyway. I love to be a hero....but not expecting it. Thanks all.

Not smelling anything in the cabin is not positive assurance that you are safe. Could your problem possibly also result in CO emissions (no odor but deadly - see Ford's current problem with their police SUV's)? In my opinion, it's just not worth the risk in not having a dealer determine the problem and at least assure you that it is not a safety problem.

I got my OEM gas cap from Amazon. If your cap is the original one, then you are due for a new one. It may be part of why you smell gas after driving because the gas tank does build up pressure and the cap gasket may vent a little after driving. That is why it may not give a code during startup... The cap gasket does get thinner with use and eventually fails.

My car just started doing the same thing. I smell gas when I get to work or get home and get out of the car. I never smell it while driving. When I replaced my head gaskets about 10k miles ago I replaced all of the crush washers and injector o- rings in the fuel system. I also replaced all of the vapor hoses in the engine compartment. My only thought as to where the smell is coming from is a vapor line from the charcoal canister underneath the car. The purpose of the canister is to trap fumes from the system which are then fed into the intake manifold under certain operating conditions. As soon as work slows down I will investigate further (70 hours a week doesn't leave much time for anything else!). My '94 Toyota pickup also has the same issue and all fuel system components are new on it as well.

Please keep us posted. Sounds exactly like my condition. Thanks.

As this thread went quiet, may I ask if either Bocatrip or 911LE resolved the gas fume issues?
