Default Check engine light help

So I've had a check engine light on. Luckily I have a scanner. And the codes are evap and purge valve.
I changed my gas cap already.and it's still on.and I do have the gas smell in the rear passenger
So my question is
How do I check if it's my charcoal canister
OR the purge valve
OR a leak/loose connection.
Any diy suggestions.
I know I can take it to a shop and have them do a Smoke test. I think it's called. Any info will help me. I've searched her on cl.nothin really comes up. Mostly for sc430 and gs

check all vaccuum lines leading up to the purge valve, it may be cracked/split.
