Default Nav - Dirty Disc and/or Disc Error

I have a gen 4 navigation unit in a 2002 LS UL (upgraded to replace my gen 2/3 unit).. It was working perfectly and I was enjoying the upgrade. Lately, I have been getting an "error" message. Cleaning the disk helps for a short time and then the error reappears.

Any ideas. What other parts of the system could it be other than the disc or the player? Thanks.

Borrow another known good disc and see if it works. That would show what is at fault - the disc or the player.

Have you gotten your trunk wet lately? It sounds like you may have a moisture problem within the player. Does it happen mostly on warm/hot days?

I have ordered a new disk but my guess is that the problem is the player. The trunk and the well that holds the player are clean and dry. My question is whether there is another part other than the player such as a nav ecu, antenna or possibly a harness that could result in a problem.

It's either the disc or the Nav player. You could try cleaning the lens reader in the Nav player, either with a CD/DVD lens cleaner, or by removing the Nav player and getting to the lens manually with a cotton swab / tip and rubbing alcohol. Overtime, the strength of lens reader diminishes and can't read the digital info on the DVD.

Are you using an authentic OE Nav disc? Copied discs are often done poorly such that the digital info is weak and not easily seen by the lens reader. If it's a copy, try an authentic OE disc.
