Default 2001 LS Trunk wont latch...help !

Hey all,

Had to drop some things in my trunk today, When I closed it, it wont latch (so if I have to drive it I get the "Trunk open" message on the dash). I tried to yank the battery to see if can reset the system but, had no change.

If I hit the trunk open on the FOB, I can hear the motor going, so it does not appear to be dead.

Any idea how I can fix this or what to look at with out breaking the bank ?

Thanks !!!!

$300-500 ? OUCH, I guess I am going to have to start looking in Junk yards....Dam.

Is that part the whole motor, or just the locking part ? Do they come as different parts or do you have get the whole thing ?

I figured $100-150 or so....any way to fix what I have ?

So it doesnt latch as in if you close the trunk you can just pull up on it and it will open? Or does it latch but you just get the trunk open light on your dash?

I can just pull it up, it's not latched. It opens and closes fine, it just does not latch when I close it. I took a screw driver sideways and pushed it in the latch, it did not lock on it.

It keeps open just a hair because of the shocks in it but, it's about 98% closed. So if I start the car, it comes up with "trunk open" message on the dash.

Of course it started raining here (no room in the garage right now), so I grabbed a few towels to protect the paint and something fairly heavy, that closed it. So now it's 100% closed with weight on it, I started the car and put it in drive, the "Trunk open" message shows up on the dash....

The reason I strongly believe it is the lock itself is because strangely enough this failed on my car very early in it's life. Via the service records, the previous owner had the lock mechanism replaced at only about 40,000 miles on my car. The description of the problem was the trunk not staying closed. Lexus replaced the lock mechanism.

Yea, tried that, no luck

Read some places that it could be adjusted, so made an appointment with a local car repair place to check it out. I am sure it wont be that easy....

Never had a problem with this and one day, bing it' no longer works...

Ok, got back from the repair shop. The problem is the sensor in the motor that tells if it's opened or closed, so it's going lock and unlock in one click of the remote.

So, they sort of got it working. It closes and latches now but, they disabled the motor so the only way I can open the trunk is by using the key. They only charged me $65 for this so I guess I can live with it now and the light is off on the dash, so that is also good.

I have had this car for 12 years now. I have never used the key in the trunk...I guess I have to now, till I can find a replacement part for say around $100 or so and I will swap it out myself....

sigh....

Thanks for everyone's suggestions here...

I randomly came across that website when I was searching for the part number for your lock mechanism. Their prices look pretty darn good. The only thing is I wonder how much it is to ship the part from Japan?

Smile Trunk Latch Op

In follow-up to my trunk issue, problem was a faulty latch. White plastic position indicator was broken. Purchased new switch assembly from Amazon or Ebay for $120 and replaced it. Works fine now.
