The above posting was for a 2003 that the transmission would not engage until the engine is rev'ed up to 4000rpm. Sorry for the confusion...

Here's what I found on ATF in the 04-06 repair manual...

Thanks rkw ... the repair manual attached shows 1.4 qts. on a drain and fill. However, DIYers are saying 2-3 qts. on drain and fill for '04-'06. Just trying to understand why the discrepancy.

When it comes time to do my '06's ATF, it looks like I should have 3 qts. of WS available.
I drive up on front ramps and maybe that is why I have always drained out 3 quarts...

That's the way I'll do it then. I'd much rather get 3 qts. replaced on a drain and fill rather than 1.37 qts. That's a huge difference as a percent of total ATF capacity of the tranny. One question: the car must be level to refill the correct amount of ATF WS?

Only the front of the car is up on ramps and I slide carefully underneath to replace the WS ATF. It was a little tight but I got it done. LOL. I measured the old drained ATF and it was 3 quarts and I replaced it with the same amount. I may have installed an extra 2-3 ounces... The tranny is smooth as silk.

That makes sense XJS. It is a benefit to get that extra 1.5 quarts in one go when using ramps. No problems pumping in the 3 quarts back in I suppose? This way of measuring is not really the correct procedure but as long as you don't get it wrong it should be fine. Always better to get a little over then under.

My fluid looks great after just 3 and I will have Blackstone lab results back next week most likely. Unless the lab results show something different I won't do another until 165k or so. Bring a small Tupperware and have them collect a sample from the first D&R. You can also send yours off if you want or at least look at the color for educational purposes. The 460 uses a lot of fluid. Both oil and hydraulic.

Was 104k the first time your car ever had a drain and refill? I ask because I'm going your route and I have similar mileage (112k), and it's never been serviced. Shifts beautifully still.

Correct. I purchased the car at 104k it was the first thing I did. Transmission, differential, and throttle body. Mine shifted great too but maintaining her ensures she will shift great until 350k miles.

can you mix synthetic with original oil in the transmission when doing the drain and fill?
e/g I buy a car from a used car dealer who does not know what oil is used in the transm.
is this a good thing to change from old to synth in a 12year old car?

Don't ever mix transmission fluid. It's not like engine oil. The additive packages are very important and you don't want to screw this up. If you have an 01-03 stay with type IV fluid. I don't recommend using aftermarket brands either. Stick with OEM.

How did your diff fluid look? Mine has been inspected before but never changed. I plan on doing that as well while the tranny is serviced. That will complete all of my fluids being fresh.

Also, is there any way to tell if your diff is "going bad"? My car is flawless but I'm just curious

I did not see my differential fluid when it was done. The differential is rather heavy duty but this fluid should be changed at least once every 100k miles. I think 50k is a better interval. Very easy to do. I will probably do it myself next time.

Here are a few pics from the ls400. Very similar to ours.

changing differential fluid on a ls 430 is easier then changing the oil in a corvette.

I was on my side using a hand pump to get the ATF in the fill hole. Not hard but it was not comfortable. LOL.
