Default Telescoping Wheel Not Working

2005 LS430
Car is full of Bugs, the steering wheel travels up when exiting the car and goes back down after starting but the wheel will not telescope in or out.
I read somewhere that the function can be disabled by the dealer. All I have tried is using the four way switch on the left side of the steering Colum.
Is this a known LS problem?

More bugs to follow.

Thanks all!

Yes, the dealer can turn that off. Even a Toyota dealer can do it. If you ask nicely they might not charge a fee. It is a well known issue

So the only way to tell if the motor is defective or the function was turned off by a dealer would be to bring it to a dealer and connect to their diagnostic computer.

Wonder if that function has its own fuse or shares the same supply/fuse as the tilt function motor which seems to work.

Thanks for the comment.

Were you able to telescope the steering wheel manually with the 4-way switch? If not, the telescopic motor is defective. The 4-way manual switch can move the steering wheel regardless of the C-Best setting. Also, the telescopic and tilt motors share the same fuse. It's in the driver-side fuse box and is called something like "TE/TI".

I disabled the auto tilt to avoid burning out the motors. It's a nice feature to have it tilt away when you turn the car off but not at the expense of loosing a motor or two with the age of the vehicle.

I too had that issue with my 05. I enjoyed the feature and continued to use it manually. I researched buying used motors and had someone ready to install them before I decided to trade it. Great car, disappointed in the steering.

Didn't know it could be used manually, how do you do that.

Use the 4-way switch located on the left side of your steering column (under the turn-signal stalk). Move the switch towards you to extend the steering wheel; move the switch away from you to retract; move the switch up to tilt up, and down to tilt down.

Yes I know about the electrical switch, I misunderstood your "Manual Mode" I thought you could move the wheel in and out manually.

Thanks

If you take steering column shroud off you should be able to clamp down on the screw mechanism with vice grips and adjust the column manually. I did this on my old LS400 after a motor failed in the away position and then of course left the motors unplugged.

Great feature to have. In my humble opinion everything should be in working order in such a nice car. Its a tricky DIY but only takes about 2 hours but will last another 100k miles......replace the motor. If you do like other posters have done by removing lower knee airbag its a piece of cake. I was scared of anything air bag related so I just worked around it. It should certainly be noted most of these motors still work but are jammed. They need to be manually operated to the full throw then u can try using the button again. Or disconnect.....adjust to full throw.....then reconnect and try again before buying new motor.

Good luck
