Default Which aftermarket Nav system to go with

Due to an unfortunate accident in my LX450, I've decided to finally switch to the LS430. I have already "purchased" one (2001 with not a lot of options) which I'm going to pickup on Sunday. I've done some searching on the forums and found nothing, so I apologize if these questions have been asked many times before.

The first mod I'm planning to do is an aftermarket navigation system for the LS (mine does not have the o.e.m. navigation unit). I found the thread (https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls4...-in-ls430.html)that shows the nice trim kit from beat-sonic to blend the unit with the dash but here are my questions regarding upgrading to an aftermarket navigation system:

Is there a far superior navigational unit that I should purchase or is this all a matter of personal preference? Most of the threads regarding adding navigation to the LS430 are pretty old now and the navigation units on the market have greatly changed.
Do any brands offer free updates while others require a continuous payment for updates?
Is there a specific screen size that is needed for the kit (beat-sonic website doesn't specify)?

Looking to stay under $1000 for everything not including installation (as I will do that myself)

Thanks in advance and once again sorry if these are the typical new-comer questions as I have a feeling they are. I'll post pictures of my ride after I pick it up.
