Lexus vs. Toyota Dealer for maintenance (quality vs cost)
#16
possibly one of the craziest threads on the forum its all relative to the toyota dealer thats local, its bad enough you go to lexus with multi million dollar budgets and get rims scratched during balancing or things being done with cut corners, if you have a great toyota dealer local and you can network to find out who is the best mechanic then go, obviously oil change is different you can go to walmart buy mobil 1 extended performance and bring it to toyota,
for timing belts water pumps and things that require time and experience just have the right tech work on it at toyota or lexus. i always scope out the best reputation of mechanic of any garage if you don't you will learn why the hard way,
cheers

I called the Toyota dealer and asked if they would allow me to bring my own oil and filter and they said no problem. Picked up a K&N oil filter and 5 qts of Royal Purple for $50 at AutoZone. They said the labor would be $20 so I'm still making out cheaper than letting them use their own oil and filter of unknown quality. The K&N filter felt much more solid and heavier than the Motorcraft or any other filter brand they had. Anyone have any experience with these on the LS430?

I think either filter will be more than fine. The motorcraft is just cheaper and has great reputation. With the royal purple and good filter you should be fine for 7500 mile intervals for your oil changes.

Just to update, I had a great experience at the Toyota dealership. The service rep have me a coupon for discounted labor even though I brought my own oil and filter. They said my alignment was fine. My Dunlop tires on the drivers side are less worn than on the passenger side which they say is causing the right pull. Getting Goodyear Eagle F1's all the way around on 18" wheels. They also were able to disable the auto retract for the steering column, which will save the motors for $40. I did go across the street to Lexus to buy some touch up paint. $28 for base coat and parchment crystal top coat shipped to my house (didn't have it in stock), which isn't too bad as far as Lexus goes lol. Thanks all for your advice! I saved a ton of cash.
