Post Brembo + Akebono = Excellent

I just recently had my rotors and pads replaced on my 2001 LS430. The rotors were showing signs of rust around the edges and down in the vents. My mechanic guessed they were original to the car. I acquired the car with 53k in late 2010 (now has 87k). Pads were gone and the wear sensors had tripped (front and rear) almost simultaneously.

I had not seen or found many posts about this rotor and pad combo specifically. I went with Brembo OE rotors and Akebono ProACT pads. The pads are still bedding in 200 miles later but no squeaks or issues and excellent stopping power, though Akebono says to brake lightly for the first 300 miles or so.

I would highly recommend this combination. I was able to pickup the pads and rotors through FCP Imports, and the caliper bolts through Irontoad. My local mechanic installed it all for $180 - and that included an oil change and tire rotation. The whole experience really alerted me to the ridiculous costs of the dealer and some "franchised" independent shops. One independent shop wanted $540 to do just the front rotors and pads. And we all know how much the dealer wants ($800 for front).

Follow up with long term results when you have it. Agree that the job fee for the LS pad replace is crazy, it's literally a 15 min job tops using a floor jack, imagine how fast using a lift. I think the LS just falls into the category of high priced car and such ease to do that shops know they're making a killing even if to charge $200 for the job.

joerogan,
I sent you a pm with the specific costs.

For everyone's benefit - $322 for new rotors, pads, and wear sensors. Figure $4/ caliper bolt (you need 8 for the whole front and rear job).
