For the record I am on 5w30 from Toyota.

They put 10k, I follow 10k, anything more is just strange. And no, I don't want to see sludge pictures because the person changed their oil once if 50k.

 

I do find it interesting that back in the day it was 3 mo/3k when no one offered any service plans. but then service plans were available they all the sudden jumped up to 10,000 or 15,000 miles intervals. so which came first, are engines better so now they're offering a service plan at relatively low cost , or are the plans there with longer intervals because to try to prolong the intervals so the manufacturers dont have to service free as much?

 

I have been saying this for awhile now. Hell yes it's all about money. As soon as the manufactures started paying for this they extended the intervals.

 

It's purely the fact that oils are much better than they used to be..

7500 using 5W-30 synthetic

 

I change the oil between 7500 and 10000 miles. I have put almost 100000 Miles on the car in the last 3 years. I got 250000 miles out of my ML320 and I went longer between oil changes. As long as 17000 miles in the summer and 10000 miles in the winter.

 

I do around 7k -8k miles on synthetic, and I honestly think that's probably overkill.

Consumer Reports did a famous test where they used NYC taxicabs. They tore down the engines before the test, looked at the engine under a microscope, then looked after different mile intervals with different oil change schedules. They found even with conventional oils, going up to around 7,500 miles made no difference. And no one here puts their cars through anything nearly as grueling as being a taxi in NYC. It's stop and go 24/7.

I don't think manufacturers give those oil change schedules with 12k miles because they're trying to save money on service because very few manufacturers give free oil changes. I think Audi, BMW and VW are the only ones that offer this "free" when you buy the car under warranty, so around 90% of new cars don't have that obligation, yet many of those same companies go with longer oil change intervals. I honestly think they've done internal studies and found it's a waste to change your oil so soon.

 

I run Eneos oil, and usually change around the 10k mark.

eoilchange.com sells 3 oil changes for around $50. They are done at my local Toyota dealership, so I did 3 oil changes per year for my ES300. Hope to do the same with my LS430.

 

I don't think it should be as much dependant on mileage as it should on the conditions during use. For example, if you make short trips and don't warm up the car, it develops condensation in the engine and can promote corrosion if it is not warmed up thoroughly and driven frequently. If your car is a "hangar queen" you may want to consider adding camguard as it helps prevent corrosion. Alot of aircraft owners use this if they don't fly frequently.
