Wow, I wish I would've read this post years ago. Thank you Akinsm for the fantastic information. Worked like a charm. I started with my passenger side mirror since it was the busted one. I'm definitely going to finish the job by bolting down my drivers side too!
BTW, I had used a 8 inch plastic tie wrap and secured the mirror to the base and kept it from rotating out 180 degrees and it worked for several months until my mechanic fixed it. It wasn't as obvious as you might think and nobody ever noticed it and you can't see it from the driver's position.
Sorry to reviving this old thread. I think I have the same problem. My driver side mirror rotate pass its stop position. Where do you apply zip tie? Just on the outside? I may need a temporary solution while trying to understand how to fix this permanently.

Just make a small hole at the back of the mirror assembly and put a screw to anchor the zip-tie to stop the mirror assembly moving.
