I read the post where the DIY changed his trans fluid by removing a hose on the rear of the radiator, extending it into a container and started the car and let 1 quart run out, then turned the car off and added a quart, and then did this 7 more times, using 8 quarts total to get the fluid to turn red. I looked in my manual and it says that the trans fluid capacity is 1.8 quarts. So my question is, was his the same capacity, and it just took 8 quarts to clear up a 1.8 quart system, or did he have an 8 quart system?
I used a pump to suck it out from the top, through the trans fluid dipstick tube,
and ended up sucking out almost 3 quarts! I thought that it must have been overfilled, but this idea was negated when I put 2 quarts in it when refilling, and it still showed the level being at the second mark on the stick and not the top mark which I expected from a 1.8 quart system! Doesn't add up?
I made the post. I would guess that you would get about 2 quarts just draining the pan. The 8 quarts comes into play when you use the trans pump to cycle the fluid for the change. It took me 8 quarts to get the outcoming fluid to look brand new. I think some of the new fluid gets mixed with the old fluid during the exchange so it takes a little more new fluid to clear out the old. I don't know the capacity of the trans.
Thank you. One final question if you will. The stick has notches on it and the word HOT
between the top two notches. How do you read the level from the stick?
