The older 400 isn't bad for the time either. I likes the RWD.

What's wrong with RWD? And I agree with RA40, while the LS430 is certainly great, the LS400, especially the 1998-2000, leaned more toward "the best".

I agree, my LS430 has been rock solid but, the LS400 is the classic of the LS brand for sure. I dont think the new technology can take the crown from the LS400. Heck, it's why the LS even got of the ground and when I went looking I actually went to search for a LS400 but, came across the LS430 and a great deal. The LS400 gets, my vote even though the LS430 isn't far behind and I own one. HAHAHAHAH! That said, your question is valid though. I havent had many issues besides regular wear and tear and TSB's related to the year/make/model I own and all were taken care of by the warranty I had. Since the warranty has went out, no issues yet.

I have a bad speaker but, dont listen to much radio loudly. Just need to hear the music, not go deaf! HAHAHAHA! Good topic! LGNM

There both great cars(LS400/LS430) and ironically to me, the LS460 is having the issues that concern me. Maybe its all the new technology that has complicated the reliability we are used to with Lexus. For me, less is more and that's why I like the LS400 more even to this day.

Yes, the new gadgets add visuals and toys to play with but, to me a cars ability to drive and be comfortable are the things that make car ownership truly valuable. Luxury is about the toys and extras certainly but, couple that with reliability and a rock solid service record and that's money well spent. Can't go wrong with the LS400 or the LS430 buddy. Both have been pretty even on reliability. That said, I love the clean Look of the LS400 especially the 1998-2000! Don't sleep on the 1990-1997 either. When I was looking I wanted the 2000 LS400, couldn't find one,was popular then as is now with Lexus fans. I don't like the look of the LS460 myself and its why I still have my aging 2001 LS430 with 108,000 miles on it. Heck, may just drive it to the wheels fall of and get a 2000 LS400 also, hahahaha! Great topic! LGNM

I think best of all LS's is the last gen(98-00) ls400. It had the most quiet, airline-like smoothness. Fit and finish was best on these.

Sold my Black 2001 LS430 5 years ago to get out of a car note and focus on a house. Now that I have a home and I've settled in I bought a silver 2001 with 78K miles on it but 1/3 the cost of the black one. Just couldn't get the LS430 out of my system. I never really got to fully enjoy the first one since I has it less than 2 yrs. Was and still is an outstanding vehicle. Look forward to driving it whenever I need to go somewhere!!

It has been a pretty good car for me also. I am getting 25-26 mpg's with a mix of city and hwy driving. I have not driven a front wheel drive car in a while. Could you explain to me why the LS BMW MB Jaguar, Infiniti, Audi and others should go to FWD. The Best? but pretty darn good!

I don't think we'll be performing the spiritual "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" when it comes to the LS400 or LS430.

The 430 is by far the best car I have had so far in terms of quality and refinement. Love the handsome styling, high tech gadgets (that are dependable and easy to use), and awesome engine/trans combo. I cast a best vote for best car ever made. Seeing how everyone raves about the LS400 I really want to try one out in the near future.

Side note: drove a merc S500 4matic over the weekend and was highly/extremely impressed. That thing is on par with the 430 for sure in terms of quality and refinement (though not reliability as the tire pressure monitoring sys died suddenly at the end of the drive lol).

I have to laugh here a little. Mercedes become the pinnacle of highest class luxury cars and then went straight down the drain.

The other day I whisked (on the highway) by a Merc CLS getting hitched up to a tow truck. It didn't even look a year or two old. The owner was all suited up for the mechanic shop.

Back in the day every one wanted a merc...today I want a back in the day merc or better yet an LS430...lol!

Something I wish the LS400 had was double pained windows. The ls430 does right? Don't tell me you have to get the UL for that...lol
