I had my mom's 2000 V6 Honda Accord timing belt changed with 50,000 miles on it. Although the car was 10 years old, the belt was absolutely brand new when removed. Of course I changed the water pump as well which was also in like new condition. Manufacturers play it safe when deciding when belts should be changed which is wise for them to do.

Thanks guys for all the input. Yes im very conscience about maintainence and buy this being my only ride for now, i have to take care of it as much as possible. Next month probably will be when i do all the stuff. Will be goin to an independent Lexus shop because the dealers are ridiculously high in my area(MD,DC,VA). I do feel that the belt could last a long time but not interesting in giving something of this importance a longevity test lol.

when i had my 1991 LS400 my timing belt broke at 150,000 miles. While i was driving i heard a big bang noise and the car just shuts down. I took it to the dealer and they said that my timing belt needed to be replaced. They told me that the everything shuts off so that nothing else gets damaged.

Nothing "shuts off". Without a timing belt the camshaft is no longer synchronized with the valves and the engine stops running. It is not a feature, it is just the way an engine works.

The 1990 to 1994 LS's were non-interference engines, so the pistons don't slam into the valves when the timing belt breaks. The 1995+ engines are interference engines. The pistons will hit the valves and do significant, if not catastrophic, damage to the engine.

You said camshaft, but you meant crankshaft there right? seeing as the crank turns the belt, which sends drive to the cams, which in turn push the valves open.
Just clearing it up so that newbs don't get confused...

Timing belt broke on our '93 SC4 at 160K and the engine just stopped. Replaced along with water pump and kept going.

Im actually looking to perform the service on my '02 GS. I purchased the Aisin (Japanese and OEM supplier) kit from rockauto.com

AISIN kit includes the following components:
  • AISIN Water Pump
  • Koyo Idler Bearing
  • Koyo Tensioner Bearing
  • Mitsuboshi Timing Belt
  • Water Pump Gaskets & O-Rings
I'm going to pick up the thermostat sometime this week, and i should be set. If anyone is wondering, the kit was around $270? i think.
