My navigation unit won't load up the maps anymore and I was wondering what could be the problem? Message says "error can't read DVD." I opened my trunk and tried to eject the disk but nothing comes out either.
Sounds like the DVD is going out, or the DVD reader has issues. You could try to unplug the battery for 15mins and try again to eject the CD to check for any issues.
Had a similar problem on our 01. Turned out the DVD Reader went out. My service advisor said that this tends to happen after time, so my guess is this is what happened to yours. Replacement can be a bit expensive however. The option that made more sense to me was replacing the Navigation ECU with a used one off of eBay. I ended up with a Gen4 Navigation ECU (from a 2006 RX400h) in my 01, which came with Gen2, for a one third of the cost of a new Gen 2 unit. The harnesses for the Gen 2,3, and 4 are the same for the most part, so your navigation will work. You might lose the voice command function depending on if the navigation ECU you purchase matches up to your microphone harness. Install is pretty simple as well; I just needed basic hand tools. It took me around 30 minutes from start to finish (Once you know what you're doing, it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes). There's a thread about this in the 2nd Gen GS Forum that helped me get a lot of the information I needed. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...direction.html.
At the end of the day, my navigation started working again, I got newer maps, slightly better looking interface and graphics, and all of it was done at a fraction of the cost new replacement parts.
