i set it to MD and it works great. the only thing is that i cant get to MD mode through the steering wheel controls, it has to be by pressing the cd button. is there a way to fix that?

After looking at the manual, it looks like you have to be using "CD Emulation" to access the iPod via the steering wheel control. (It would come up as "CD1", right after "CD" is displayed.) If your vehicle requires you to use "MD Emulation", then you'd never see "CD 1".

Maybe it would work for you if you use your CD button on the dash to get to "MD" and then just leave it set that way. Then maybe every time you use your steering wheel button, when the CD position comes around, it will still be set at "MD" from the last time you were there.

I have the SL2i in my car, but I can't try it now because she's out with the car. (I suppose by saying that, I'm admitting that it's "her" car), but I'll try it later.

Anyhow, if your car requires "MD" Emulation according to the VAIS application chart, the steering wheel control may not get you there. Of course, that would apply to me also. so I'm interested now.

We have seen this problem on some older LS430 models. You can only access MD using DISC button on the radio itself. The only thing you can do is to double check if you have CDs in your CD changer, if you don't you can try inserting at least one in there. If CD is there and it still doesn't work, then unfortunately nothing can be done.
