Lexus LS vs BMW 7
Plus, physics is not linear. Doubling horsepower does not mean you cut the acceleration time in 1/2. It takes the Bugatti over 1000 hp to cut the 0-60 2 seconds.
I have my parents short wheelbase 2005 745 in my possession now, and the only things I like about it the spacious trunk and lively engine. It's low end torque is definitely stronger than LS430, and about equal at top end.
But other than that, quite honestly, the car is just a POS. The assembly, materials, quality just do not compare to the LS and S class. The whole interior is literally falling apart, and its full of little issues. LS is a far more rewarding vehicle, especially the Ultra Luxury model equipped with air suspension.
As far as people talking about BMW's sporty handling, spare me the nonsense. The 7 series is a huge luxury sedan, and handles like a boat. Once you start pushing it, it rolls just like the LS, there's really not much difference.
I the next several weeks I will probably buy the 745 out from my parents (they will of course sell it to me very cheap). If that happens, I'll immediately sell it/trade it for LS430 lux.

I've never been able to get my arms around a BMW. I've tried several times to get into a 5 or 7, but they just leave me cold. I really like the looks of the "old" 7 (previous gen to this one), but they are mechanical nightmares according to everyone I have talked to who knows something about them.
I love the reliability and comfort of the LS, but some of the comments about the handling are spot on. It's a luxo-cruiser and not meant to be flung about. I wish Toyota would go all the way with making it a flagship; seeing Camry switchgear in the cabin is disappointing.
Although I am admittedly biased, my Mercedes S-class (W220) is head and shoulders above the 7 and is a different car altogether from the LS. That isn't part of this discussion, so I'll hush about it.
Cheers, fellas.

My parents also have the W220 S500, and its absolutely head and shoulders above the 7, no comparison whatsoever. And it is indeed quite different from the LS430, mainly because its LWB only.
Spent some time this weekend in a friends 2004 745i. The materials used inside look a lot better at first glance than they look with a close inspection. Feels like they skimped on interior for a luxury car that expensive.
Another thing I had forgotten about was how much I hate iDrive. Maybe it gets better with lots of experience but I think it's brutal.

I bought an LS430 and SC430 after driving BWM 7 and 6 Series. I liked the BMWs more than both of the Lexus (Lexi?) I went with the LS after reading an article where the CEO of Ford called it the best car ever made. Both cars were the tops in Consumer Reports reliability. My SC is near eight years old, I would not feel safe driving an eight year old BMW. My wife and kids are in the LS. I don't want them to be left on the side of the road. Reliability was the deciding factor. Maintainence is also much less expensive on these cars. A buddy with an SL500 took his in for a brake job at the same time my SC needed brakes. These cars are direct competitors. I bought factory pads, and paid $250 to have them installed. His break job was several thousand dollars. These cars are very easy to live with.
Finally, i bought a 2004 LS430, paid deposit and wait 2 days to handover. I will change the suspension to coilover for better handling, anyone tried HKS hipermax LS+ before? The mileage is around 20k but i know it reclock, saftey belts changed to 2006,registered years changed to 2006 but have a 2004 spare tire, i asked for original mileage for changing timing belt info, they just told me to change around 60k. I still bought it because the engine is quiet and smooth and interior look new compared to others LS430.
