switch to 10w-30 engine oil?
so i was changing my oil today at my uncle's shop since i can use the lift... and one of his mechanics that i really really dont trust (my uncle getting rid of him he don't know ish) was telling me to switch to 10w-30 and i ignored him and just finished up and left but im not sure i figure i would ask the CL pro's what they think....
so 2001 96,500 miles

10w30 is good, you will notice decreased MPG and more sluggish performance with thicker oil.
my lame mechanic (of which I will never go back to) threw in some thick oil (whatever they had) during my last major tune up and my mpg went down the toilet with a more sluggish feel.
changed back to 10w30 and noticed a big difference.

stick to whatever oil you had. If you're not having problems, then no need to switch oil weight at all. These engines aren't the typical motors that lose their tolerance like the 70s domestic cars
don't move up to 10w. aither stay with the recc. 5w30 or you might even wanna go 0w30. why? cause startup is when most engine wear occurs due to the oil that has thickened during cool down. it takes a little longer to hit those vital parts when using 10w,20w50, etc... its an old school theory that when an engine gets older you need thicker oil due to gaskets and clearance. not true, your just going to have to check your oil more often due to burn off and contaminates from worn piston rings and so forth allowing unburned fuel or deposits back into the pan. So I suggest either sticking to 5w30 or even 0w20 or 30. not as thick when cool, yet same level of viscosity at operating temp. as the 10w,20, etc...
