Default synthetic oil vs dino oil

ok, another stupid questoin reguarding these two oils. I have a 98 es300 running at 127,000 miles. Is it time to switch to synthetic oil or stick to my regular dino oil?

thanks

This age-old topic has been covered MANY times before (hint: use the 'Search' function)

But I'll tell you from my present experience. I have a 2001 ES300 w/ over 94,000 miles, and switched to synthetic oil when I passed the 90K mark a couple months ago. I haven't had any problems with it, and from what I hear, synthetic oil is recommended for cars with higher mileage. Also, if you feel that synthetic oil is not cutting it for you, you are OK to switch back to dino oil; don't fall for the myth that once you switch to synthetic, you stick to it permanently. Hope this info helps out

It used to be you would run dino for about two changes with a new car, and then switch to synthetic. Now cars come pre-loaded with it.

However, with older cars, anytime is a good time to switch to synthetic.

The one thing you have to think about it what brand and what weight. For my 99 RX, it depends on the location and environment, but I have always used Mobil 1. For your vehicle a 5W-30 and maybe a 10W-30 might be good.

If you're planning to go synthetic, just do your oil change like any other oil change, but make sure you take plenty of time to drain all of your old oil out. That's why I have recently started to do my own oil changes instead of taking the car to the dealership (since most of the time they're working against a 30-min window)

FYI, I'm using Mobil-1 10W-30 synthetic with a OEM Toyota oil filter.

My next door neighbor pours in half quart of fresh oil to "flush" the old oil out.

BTW, I thought the ES specifies 5W-30 oil.

As far as I know that's correct harrier.....however those ES owners who have higher milage perfer to use 10W30 as it's slightly thicker & I've heard no complaints from them.

The manual says that 5W-30 is preferred. 10W-30 is listed as a usable grade, however, there is a precaution note about using it in extremely low temperatures (<0°C).

The preferred oil is fine but also is the 10-30 since with a synthetic the pour point is like -40 and the pumping is like -20...More then most need.

So if using a synthetic oil, either one is fine.

Synthetic in a normally aspirated car is prettymuch ALWAYS a better choice than dino oil.

mburn is correct....however if the 'thicker' 10W 30 still bothers you in very cold climates in the winter, that's easy to get around.....consider inatalling a block heater, they are fairly cheap.
