Yesterday the up and down feature on the steering wheel stopped working. In and out seems fine. Also, when the car is turned off it no longer retracts in and up like before. I don't hear any mechanical sounds when the button is pushed though it does feel like it wants to go down but there is no movement going up. I suspect the switch but I thought the auto retract feature would still work going in even if the manual switch was defective. Any help would be appreciated.
might be the motor not sure, im going to try and open it up and see whats going on in there cause i highly doubt its the motor cause i can hear noise when i try to move it up and down
I just went out and played with it some more and the up and down actually moves about 1/4" and it does retract in when the key is removed. It didn't do this yesterday. Still cannot hear any mechanical noises from the steering column.
Could be a Technical Service Bulletin on the car. Maybe the 2004 LS430 has had an issue with the steering wheel retracting. Put in a google search for TSB's for the 2004 LS430 or simply ask your dealer about the issue your having. It may be something thats happening to the model year. The 2001 I have had issues with the gear shift getting stuck in park and also the rearview mirrors not folding and unfolding.
Some model years have issues. My 2001 had an issue with the same as you all have experienced and the dealer fixed it under warranty. My issue was minor because it was making a sound as it was going in and out so they oil the gears that make it retract so the sound could stop. Also a couple of times my sterring wheel did what you guys are speaking of but, I left it in manual for a couple days and then went back to the retracting feature and it worked well since.
