One of the holder "arms" has broken on my console cup holder so I need to have it replaced. Is this a DIY project for a person of average mechanical skills? What's involved? Any tips would be welcome as well.
Its very easy. I had to pull mine out to route the wires for my SLI. Plus one of the arms broke off of mine too so I'll be replacing it as well. All you need to do it pull off the woodtrim around the shifter, it's held on with clips. Just be careful, I broke one of my clips, still fits normal. After that you'll see 4 screw/bolts holding in the cupholder, take them off and it pops right out.
Thanks for the reply sirdoc. Do you have any suggestions for removing the wood trim so I don't damage it or the surrounding area? Any special tools or techniques?
Not really, it was pretty hard to pull up so if you yank on it and it doesn't come out, keep pulling. I know I said be careful but it does take some force. Best way I can think of is pulling the Heated Seats/VSC wood panel off first. It's also held on with clips. It should pop out somewhat easily. Use a flat tipped screw driver and cover the end if it in tape so you don't scratch the trim. You can use that to pry panels off easier as well. Once you pry the seat heater/VSC panel off just stick your hand under the trim around the shifter area and pull with some decent force. Once that's off you'll see the 4 screw/bolts I mentioned earlier.
