You can get a 2004 LS430 Ultra for <$40,000 (I got mine for $35,000). A base 460 is going to cost you, what, $60,000?
That's not a "little cheaper".
Plus here in AZ you can buy private party and not pay sales tax. Any LS460 you get from a dealer is going to lose a LOT of value the second you drive it off the lot.
I'm going to wait until the end of the year before I start shopping for a LS460 - private party. We'll see what the prices are like - until then, I LOVE my 2004 LS430U.
Buying a used one is always a better value, as rominl mentioned, there are things the 430UL has that the 460 base does not, like laminated side glass, cooler, leather glove box doors, better quality leather seats, etc, in addition to those he mentioned above.
Of course even a base 460 is better than the 430UL in other ways, like more hp, better styling(subjective but most would agree) etc. So you have to weigh the pro's & cons. But as far as value is concerned, the used 430UL is the better buy.
we drove an 07 that was fairly loaded,, was not the long body and still low $70s without the taxes,, was nice but with the new engine and tranny I figured I'll let someone else make sure there are no first year bugs as there have been in the past,,
I'm just not a first year car buyer when there have been major changes to the mechanical side,,
main item that I noticed was the streeing and braking really felt different,,
Let me just say - I'm not a huge fan of the new styling in the LS's. I mean they've almost homogonized the entire line - from a distance, the ES, GS and LS almost look like the same car. Especially from the side! What I like about the 430's is the distinct styling - and this isn't just because the new LS is out of my price range. Obviously I like some things about the newer version, but I really like the styling of my 04 LS.

I must admit, I wasn't overwhelmed when I sat in a 2007 loaded 460. Granted I didn't drive it and I know it's a BIG difference in engine power from the 430, but the overall 'quality' of the interior didn't seem any better to me - at all. Just a bit more 'refined' in presentation and that's it...
The reason I didn't drive it is because I won't drive one until I'm ready to buy
If I had a choice between a 430 and 460 and money wasn't an option, I'd definitely get a fully loaded 460, but I'm going to be patient...

Ditto. Appearance wise, they pretty much have small, medium, large, x-large, and xx-large versions of the same car. I like Lexus a lot, but I do not like the look-alike approach that they have taken. It seems to be the industry standard practice now -- making everything look like the generic sedan.
I made the same decision and ended up with a CPO 2005 Ultra. Primarily because of the value factor mentioned below...

I'll get a LS460 in a year or two when someone else has taken the hit on the initial depreciation for me
thanks for the info. I used to work for Toyota (as a programmer) at a plant, and I would concede that the first model year has probably 10 times as many bugs as the subsequent years. Typically the first 4 months or so of the run are mayhem...with lots of little issues (alignment of interior parts, fit, etc.).

hehe, i think this is some very good info (and advise to me ) on the other hand i think it's pretty quick for lexus to fix most issues within the first few months
