Trunk
Hello, i dont know if it is a problem but when the trunk unlocks the trunk is heavy to open, is this normal should it have a springy action. someone let me know. thanks
I agree with you - it has been my one complaint so far with the car. My '03 MB E500 trunk would pop open to the fully open position when you popped it from either inside the car or with the remote. There have been many times when I have both hands full and have the key fob in my hand. I press the trunk button and have to put down what I'm carrying to open the trunk. With those gas struts operating the trunk I doubt if there is much that can be done. We'll see.

I've had my LS430 for only three month (used 2001). It appeared that the trunk struts are worn out. I looked at replacing, but none of the auto parts stores carries them. Dealer item? I think so. And, at over $80 a piece, I'll just live with the annoyance.
I very supprised that the newer 2003 LS is already having this problem. I thought that the power trunk opener and closer would push the trunk open all the way. Is this incorrect? Mine does not work that way because of the worn struts. I think...

The trunk only pops open a tiny bit. Since it uses gas struts they would have to have a motor in there like the RX330 does. My previous MB had springs that popped the trunk all the way open. Plus it had a mechanical latch on the trunk so if the car was unlocked you didn't always need the key with you to open the trunk. If your trunk doesn't stay open once it's up, then maybe the struts do need replacing.

Do the brand new ones pop open or something? I don't think they do nor did the older ones when they were new.
I think Lexus' intention was to make a 'neutrally' balanced trunk when new. In other words you could open it as much as you wanted and it would stay there. Of course over time as the struts wear you are going to have to put more and more effort into opening it. But it's not really something that, IMO, needs to be 'fixed' or 'replaced' until the trunk starts not staying open on its own.

My '04 LS' trunk lid works the same way. When unlocking, either from the key fob, the button under the lid or the button on the dash, the lid opens only slightly. I assume this is the way it was designed. I would prefer the lid to open all the way as in other cars I have had. I assume the way the lid on the LS 430 is designed, only opening slightly, is because of some fear of liability if the lid hit someone while springing open.

My '01 LS430's trunklid is also very heavy to open. There is a technical service bulletin regarding this on the 2001 (Bulletin Number EL00401). I haven't been in yet, but i will at my next oil change.

This is the way they are designed. As far as the MB's popping open the whole way, that is a good or bad attribute. After getting hit in the chin a few times (bad thing), I learned to be clear whenever the trunk lid flies open. Now it is a good thing.

i hope your chin is ok though!
Mine is one week old, and the trunk works the same way. Opens just a wee bit, then one has to lift it. My 98 Benz E300 opened completely yet controlled. It did not hit the top and spring the hinges, which leads me to believe it was dampened near the top so as not to raise too fast.

I just bought my 02 Ultra and the trunk lid feels very heavy to lift; worn struts?? Mine is under warrenty, I'll be getting an appt. to see what they say....
