Inner tie rod replacement causing steering rack leak?
Ever since I've been experiencing front end issues, I've been told a few times by Indy Shops, that if my inner tie rods are to be replaced (along with outer tie rods and upper control arms) there is a fair chance that after 175,000 miles my steering rack seals can be disturbed causing a leak and thus requiring a steering rack replacement. Has anyone experienced this or does anyone have an opinion on this repair? At this point, with the work required on my car, I certainly don't want any further expenses such as a steering rack replacement. Thanks all.
There are at least a dozen seals in a rack that definitely don’t last forever.
I tried to highlight them in the pic but i may have confused a bearing for a seal or vise versa at least once.
At 175k it’s safe to say there are likely some issues. Ask your Indy if he’d be willing to rebuild the existing rack.
The rebuild kits are available from Toyota and Lexus and hopefully he would do a more thorough job than a mass rebuild company with little accountability.
