Question Automatic Transmission Oil Filter Change

Just bought an old used 2001 LS 430 with 190k miles, well maintained with fairly decent trans fluid, but needs change, looking to change the transmission filter as well, and I wanted to know if this model of car requires an o-ring for the filter, as I could not find any parts online.

All of the A/T filters (quality aftermarket included) I've bought have had the new O-ring already on the filter. Same with oil change...just make sure the old one comes out. It likely wouldn't fit and be able to be bolted in with 2 O-rings in there anyway. You should have an easier time refilling that than the newer ones, as, I believe they ACTUALLY have a dipstick tube to fill thru.

Just be particular with the fluid level after refill. It took me a couple of tried to get it just right in my 2002. First underfilled, then overfilled, then just right. If the fluid level when warm is out of the dipstick range you'll have strange transmission shifting issues. I found that you could snake a tube down the filler neck and suck out extra fluid with a hand pump.

Do you think you'd be able to just take out the over-fill plug and start the car so it warms up and drains the excess?

Cold or hot doesn't matter, fluid will simply drain much slower when cold. Filter comes complete with crush gaskets.

Without a dipstick I had to fill till it came out overflow, close it up, shift thru gears till trans fluid was warm, and repeat that process until I finally took out overflow and and fluid dripped out. (prob 4-5x) You should be able to do something similar, they call for trans temp to be a specific temp, but I don't remember it, and didn't use a temp gun or anything. I'd find the process and read it a few times, just to make sure. It's a little more work than other A/Ts, but its not bad once you've done it.
