Took my 97 LS400 to pepboys due to a PS pump leak and they ran a dye test and told me its likely coming from one of the O-Rings. Im on a low budget so id prefer to buy just the pump without the reservoir if possible but if it happens to be the O-ring in between the pump and reservoir thats leaking would just replacing the pump cut it or would I need both?

You can just have the pump replaced. The reservoir from the old pump will be swapped over to the new pump. Provided they change the reservoir-to-pump seal, you should be fine.

If you're on a low budget do your due diligence here first without spending a dime. This is not a simple problem that's easily fixed.
If PB did a dye test ask to see where the leak is evident and take several pics. Post the pics here and let the forum guide you 👍 I cannot stress this enough, this is not a problem that's easily fixed with aftermarket parts.

this seal is a ~$2 o-ring that you can replace yourself if you have basic hand tools. there are other o-rings but this is the main culprit for leaking PS fluid on the LS!

If they want to replace the entire assembly, that's what a lot of shops do now a days. It's easier for them and decreases the odds of you coming back with more power steering problems related to your power steering. So they'd rather replace everything. Right or wrong just seems how it is.
