Default Need help, speedometer is intermittent.

I hear these are common issues, any advice? Just started this morning. 100k miles.

please let us know what year your LS is.

early models 90-94 (but also some later models too) have ECU capacitor issues that plague owners with various problems, including faulty instrument clusters:

My apologies, it's a 2000 with 100k miles. All stock.

Same intermittent speedometer function on 1999 LS400
Performed a capacitor refresh and so far no issues.
Issue more predominant in Summer, so will know more then.
Acquire capacitors listed in link beforehand, but recommend using someone with professional tools and experience to remove and install..otherwise easy to damage.

Those electrolytic capacitors seldom fail since those are not QAS capacitors. I myself checked every electrolytic capacitor of a 98 Clesior but all were in OK range. I'd rather think it's only a mechanical issue of the needle or the speed signal from the ABS computer. A good judgement needs to monitor the speed signal from the ABS computer to the speedometer.

I have this problem too, in this case being the conductive plastic sleeve that covers the pointer. It becomes tacky in high temperatures and sticks to the resting peg. Sometimes, going over a bump in the road is enough to jog it free.

There was mention (and images?) of case size shrinkage of capacitors near voltage regulator heatsink.
The original United Chemi-Con capacitors were within specifications (capacitance)...

However after 23 years anticipate some degradation in specifications.
.
Contemporary United Chemi-Con superceding series capacitors offer improved characteristics in the same case size.

This exercise is to determine whether 23 year old capacitors were contributing factors to hesitant tachometer and speedometer needles...

Typically occurs in Summer.

Will know more then.

Stay tuned.
