How smooth should a V8 be?
I recently got my 2000 LS 400 back from dealer service and it seems to be less smooth a running engine then when I brought it in. When I stopped for a stop light I noticed the steering wheel has a slight vibration that I didn't notice before. So when I stopped I raised the hood and could hear a valve like ticking noise from the passanger side of the V8 and I could feel vibration when I touched the cowl.
Question? Is a ticking noise normal? And, should it be smooth to the touch as in balanceing a coin on it's edge smooth?

I have a 98 LS400 with 44k on it. You should not feel the engin at a light. You have to really try to feel the vibration. Where my 99 RX300 with 64k you feel the engin all the time. In the RX you do feel the engin vibrating thru the steering wheel at a light.

I have a'95 with 170k still going strong, no vibrations. Take it back to the dealer and demand an explanation. They should've tested the car before they released it to you and told you something. That ticking noise is not normal.
I agree with others, no vibrations in a 2000.
Regarding quietness, say you are at a dead stop, and take off with pretty average acceleration (RPM reaches 2500 before shifting into 2nd gear); Do you guys hear anything at all? Any deep, throaty, yet quiet sound from engine/tranny? or is it COMPLETELY silent?
I'm not talking about once you've picked up speed and are doing 35-40 mph, as I'm sure it will be silent during those stages... but just during take off.
thanks

At idle, I honestly cannot tell if both my cars are on or off.
It goes to say that a 2000 LS400 should not have any vibration or ticking.

NC211,
There was really no problem in terms noise, other than normal acceleration noise (soft, deep hum during pick up). No real vibration, other than maybe when I'm standing behind a red light, there is a very very slight vibration in steering wheel. I think that's engine/transimission mount, and it would make sense, granted that it's a '91. If I change them, it should be real smooth, but I won't change mounts, because it's hardly noticable. Certainly no valve noise though.
