Adding sound absorber to dash undercover
Both left and right side panels house the footwell lights and various switches - diagnostic connectors
On North American left hand drive, the passenger side panel features a cloth-like (actual laundry dryer lint screen color) to absorb, and not reflect climate control motor noise.
The driver's side under panel is bare plastic and easily reflects sound...so decided to add 1/16" thick cork with pressure sensitive adhesive to reduce NVH.
Several images of the project in process.
Paper template is a must.
Drivers side dash under cover backside depicted...not supplied from factory with NVH reduction material....
Paper shopping bag used in template production.
Cork with template traces
The 1/16" thick cork laid out and conformed well to irregular and curved surfaces. To one side of the triangular light pocker is a curved recess requiring numerous angle pie cuts to work it in without ripping cork...
Inexpensive project that helps attenuate reflected noise under dash.
Sorry, but no before/after noise test data, however plenty online espousing the sound absorbing performance properties of cork.
Of the opinion that if you do enough small things, then they add up to meaningful results.
Interested in recommendations on other areas where reflected sound may be an issue.
Thanks
