It's a race car thing so you don't pile into the back of another car when racing in the fog.
Now I gotcha. See, still learning, that's two things today. But this is a luxury sedan, not a race car.
I guess that's why we don't have them here in the states, no London fog.
As for racing, I watch alot of NASCAR and they only run "maybe" once a year in the rain. Like not today. But when we do use it we just call it a tail light, not a fog light.
a rear fog light is some euro thing... we've all encountered some car (usually an audi it seems) with it on because it'll look like one taillight is on at the brightness of a brake light
very annoying since they never seem to realize it's on and it's very bright at night

yep, very commonly seen in my area as well, in certain BMWs and Benzs too. very annoying but not as annoying as those driving around with no lights on...but that's for another discussion.
That rear fog light button is fitted to my late 1996 Toyota Celsior, it also brings on a warning lamp in the dash gauge cluster. And is mentioned in the Japanese user manual I have.

my E-Class has one
turning the switch all the way clockwise activates the low beams, from there pulling it toward you 1 click activates the front fogs, and 1 more click the rear fog
i think some people just turn on the lights and pull the switch all the way back because that's just what they've always done, not realizing the rear fog light is on

Image depicting illuminated rear fog lamp: Celsior trunk mounted lens depicting fog lamp operating. On the flipside of lense of an unoptioned LS400 lense appears an unused circular blank area for a bulb socket plug hole.. Unsure if universal chassis wiring harness from front of vehicle to trunk harness bulkhead. The lamp sockets pigtail from trunk harness to the lens would appear to require another lamp socket.
Unclear if underdash wiring is at all universal. The only visible unassigned cable located in the area was for heater switch used to install factory heated seats...
If fog lamp wiring integrated into dash harness then not plug and play (right hand vs left hand drive wiring harness) Perhaps Toyota employed a wiring harness cable segment to option.
Had the misfortune of having to drive from Springfield to Chicago through 60 MPH wind gusts and rain that almost overwhelmed the windshield wipers at 40 MPH. That, in addition to Interstate driving behind semi tractor trailer trucks rain wash made me consider improving visibilty of my vehicle to other drivers. Meter image depicts the rear fog lamp icon to the right of the park icon. Tachometer and KPH Speedometer opposite to North American layout. There does not appear to be (unused) fog lamp icon on the North American MPH based Meter.
