My teenage son had a red squirrel drop on his foot when he started our 2008 ES 350. The squirrel scurried back up behind the dash. Not good. On previous occassions, chipmunks built a nest on top of my cabin air filter. Solved that using Irish spring slices embedded in the cabin air filter, and a Fresh Cab rodent repellant sack under the hood (
). However, I took away the rodent repellant after about a month, thinking the problem was corrected - and within days, the red squirrel appeared. So I threw a few Fresh Cab sacks on the floor thinking the squatters would find their way back out. Didn't work. So I then dropped a full Irish Spring bar on the driver floor, started the car, turned on high temp heat, max fan speed, floor and face setting, closed the doors and windows. After about 20 minutes, opened the doors and THREE little furries were happy to evacuate to cooler temps that don't smell like a cheap disco bar.
The almond butter didn't work for the the long tails in our area, set them up and they weren't touched. Switching to peanut butter that night and the next day got the two. They managed to crawl though the dryer vent opening that had been disconnected from the dryer exhaust hose. I'd placed 1/4" galvanized mesh at the entry points so they could not get in or out then set the traps. Now I get lizards in the garage that come in under the door sweep.
There are YT videos with modified Victor snap traps. Some well placed nails and coarse tooth bandsaw blades improve the effectiveness. Shawn Woods has some interesting traps. The Good Nature A24 is the one I'd like to get for outside control. A PCP rifle would be fun if in the mood.
we've had mice build nests inside my lowered IS250 and aired out LS. while sitting on the driveway, it's easy access just a mere few inches off the ground, especially the LS.
what i found that worked is to use peppermint oil which i placed directly on the driveway entry point (just a few drops) and they eventually stopped coming. peanut butter on a mouse trap didn't work at all!
Sometimes it seems like the rodents have a network of what to look out for. One of the neighbor's brought back two cats so they roam the street at night. They consider our house part of their territory as evidence from the cat scratches piles in our planter area. The backyard isn't part of the territory so rat droppings are seen regularly. Squirrels too so both are pests. A buddy showed me what one squirrel had chewed up on his garage siding trying to get in.
I had rodent problems twice eating through my knock sensor harness. Its buried so deep in the Lexus engine that it cost $500 to repair each time. During the last repair I had the mechanic wrap the wires with Honda's Rodent Tape. It's extremely tough and most important has a hot ingredient mixed into the tape that burns so bad that the rodents stops eating. It's worked for me.
