likely the tape adapter is not spinning freely any longer. make sure the gears or whatever spins on the adapter is not gummed up.

if not that, it's just a tired tape deck and you should look into an FM transmitter bluetooth instead since the radio works fine.

I have a wired cassette adapter in mine and after working great for months, I had it pulled out for a week, and then it started spitting back out. I opened it up and removed the resistance wheel/gear inside. It works now, but is a little noisier. BUT mine would still play regular cassette tapes.

Bluetooth FM Transmitter is what I use in mine, I just leave it plugged into the cig lighter under the armrest in my 99 so it stays out of sight and have a cable sneaking through the bottom to be able to charge my phone also. T10 Otium is the brand I use and can be found on Amazon for $15. Then you don't have to worry about the noisy cassette deck spinning all the time.

The cassette deck I tried spit out such awful sound quality I trashed it after about 10 seconds. The little radio FM transmitters, for me, turned out to be way way way better quality. And no moving parts so you don't risk something breaking with the cassette mechanism.

Though, for the record, it still wasn't good enough so I eventually did put a full system in my car which was another equal leap up again in quality.

tl;dr I would advise going to the bluetooth FM transmitter.

I hope someone can come in with some magic bullet solution - but I doubt anything will be as cheap\easy as a $15 bluetooth FM transmitter.

Agree with all the rest, the FM transmitter is good.Certainly not great and for an audiophile pure garbage but works fine for me.I dont use any bluetooth,my playlist is on a microSD card that plugs right into it.

I just pull it off my phone & Spotify where my music library syncs up between my computer and my phone.

But yeah a full system is pretty next level. I have some pretty high-end gear on my home office so it's valuable to me. And believe me, the car delivers .

Meh - I long since gave up that you have a semblance of privacy in this world.

Everything you do is in a database somewhere.

Bit off-topic though lol

Factory Radio Service in Rancho Cucamonga CA can add Bluetooth and aux-in to LS400 radios: https://factoryradioservices.com/

I was totally satisfied with the aux-in they added to the Nak head unit in the 2000 LS400 I used to have. Prices were reasonable and they even replaced some of the back lights for an additional $10.

My solution has been a dedicated car phone. $60 motorola maxx G7 whose battery lasts a month per charge and a cassette adapter has been working well since I got the car. I'm planning to do the AUX mod in the future as well. But for the $75 I've got invested right now ($15 sony cassette adapter), it's great. But then again, I'm old fashioned and prefer using my own audio files to streaming services.
