Default Interested in a LS400 Chicago Area

Hello. I’ve been looking since last fall for a LS400. There are a couple, but are mostly already ran through with many miles. Finally, I’ve found two options.

First is a 2000 for $3,500. Small rust on the body above the wheels. And it might need a new timing belt. It’s stock with 160,000+ miles.

Then there’s a 1990 for $5,400. No rust, everything mechanical is working. Just needs new tires. It’s also stock, but it has 130,000+ miles.

Which one should i get? This would be my joyride. This is the first forum I found, I would appreciate the advice. Thanks.

Definitely go for the 2000 model. It is much more reliable, efficient, powerful and parts will be easier to come by and not discontinued.

I purchased a 99' with 147k in Dec 2018 and it was well cared for for the past 20 years by a retired IBM Engineer. It also was a Midwest, Ohio car with some rust underneath on the rear suspension arms and Y-pipe but nothing a clean AZ parts car couldn't solve once I relocated last summer. If you like to wrench on cars, I would suggest buying a car from the south or the southwest to alleviate any potential corrosion issues you'll have.
