Tach reading 200 below
My 90 LS has been giving me funny readings for about 3 weeks now. it was showing it was shifting at 5200 and the limiter was kickin in at 5900-6000 in N. Well, i got my car smoged yesterday and it turns out the tach is showing #s about 200 below what they actually are. Anyone else have this problem? Is there any way i can fix it? i don’t think the engine speed sensor has gone bad. That’s the only thing i can think of.

Sniper, it sounds like the tach motor is getting weak. I would blame it on the motor rather than an external part. you may need to replace it soon. I can tell you a quick fix for it. since it is only 200 off, you can remove the face of the cluster and pull the needle off, then reset it 200 higher and it will read correctly. In every cluster the needle's are put on by contacts that are wider than the pole it is being mounted on. With the extra travel in the contacts you can manipulate the needle to read within 200 higher or lower pretty easily. the contact is presure fitted so it slides off and pushes back on with no problem. Use the gap in the contacts to place the needle deliberately off of dead center. This will get you the 200 extra for now.

yes thats really all i can do for now. im not sure if the accuracy gets worse as the revs go up but the car shows now its shifting at 5100-5200, thats quite a bit off. is a replacement dash my only option? other then buying another tach which i really dont want to do.
