Default Changed your cabin AC filter?

you know how the AC smells like moldy turds covered in burnt hair when you first turn it on? whens the last time you changed your cabin filter? a year? several years? decades? ever??

this is probably obvious to most of us, but to those of you that dont know, Our cars have cabin AC filters that work almost just like the ones in your home air handler. the Ls400 was one of the first cars to ever offer this if not THE first, but probably not. however most modern cars are just now catching up and adding a filter.some cars still dont have one.

its something you may not think about, if you ever have. i knew they had one just never really looked at it, until i did...

during my continuing work getting my old 95 ucf20 back to life, which you can follow here if you choose -----> https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-...aving-her.html
while on my lunch break, i changed it out . i cant believe how foul this thing is! hell, its downright shameful to think ive been riding around with this vile thing in my dashboard for so long and truth be told, i dont think the damn thing has ever been changed as it looked like an OEM part! i had to peel it off of the plastic tray its supposed to just sit in. needless to say ill be checking the AC filters on my 99 and 2000 when i get home from work tonight. after discovering such filth i walked straight to the parts department and bought a filter. soon as i put it in, i noticed a difference immediately. not only is the air blowing harder, but also warmer/cooler. the HVAC systems in these cars have to work harder to stay cool, just like your house system does when it has a dirty filter, and if left ignored can cause the AC to die. infact thats probably what kills the AC in most of these cars, as ive only had 2 Ls400s (thats out of 12) that had a busted AC system. yes, i know this thread isnt exactly festive considering half of the country is experiencing sub-zero conditions right now and this thread will probably have vanished into obscurity by then, but its something to seriously consider on your own Ls400. a bit of preventative maintenance can go a long way the more you know...

I'm pretty sure my '91 has no cabin air filter. When did they start?

One of the first things I checked when I got mine. It had been dealer maintained its whole life and had been changed many times, but I wanted to see it so I could get an idea of how frequently it needs replaced. At home I change our HVAC filter at the beginning of each season, that way there's no forgetting. I've managed properties for years and tried my best to get the owners to change the filters out at least twice a year. As much as HVAC systems cost (both home and auto), it's good preventative maintenance. Our 03 Towncar had a leaky cowl that created a mess. We never got the moldy smell to go away. I tried everything. My wife and I both got sick right after purchasing the car. We drove it down to the Gulf of Mexico and by the time I got there I was sneezing and snotting around. This was back when I smoked and it eventually turned into Bronchitis. My research on this proved interesting. Many cars suffer from musty, moldy HVAC systems, either from external leaks or internal condensation not exiting the system correctly. Mold can cause serious health problems. Thanks for bringing up this important topic Stereorob! Great pix also, I bet you freaked for a second or two!

open glove box, take out the black trim, youll see a plastic cover with the side of the filter in it, simply pull it out and put a new one in. simple.

you still need the A/C to keep the windows from condensating from running the heater, so A/C is definitely needed year round.

more to the topic, I bought a filter from the dealer and it was cool to see it was charcoal!

might be other factors involved like humidity.
it's colder than normal for a cali winter here and I have not used the AC to clear the windshield yet so I understand your experience, even with all the cold rain we are getting.

I put a bounce or other dryer sheet on top of my mine when I change it out. Adds a fresher smell to the car.

Us old folks just throw a dryer sheet under the front seat (near the heat vent) to get a fresher smell. Back in the old days there was no cabin filter. Plus it's easier to change when ya need a fresh one.
