I'm looking at buying an LS400 in the San Diego area looking for a mechanic that is trustworthy and will shoot straight andand me know what needs repairs before purchase. Any suggestions?

best to check the regional forum for this kind of question.

here might be a helpful thread:

wherever you buy it from, ask when the timing belt was last done.
check for leaks around the power steering pump (common), and if it's a pre 95 car, the ECU will be suspect due to failing capacitors (more in the FAQ section).

is the car from a private party?
