RPM increase then car dies
I own a 1992 LS400 which has nearly 500k miles. It has been a wonderful car but recently I’ve been having an issue with it stalling and quitting once warmed up. I can drive the car for anywhere between 15 min and an hour with no issues. Eventually the idle will increase to between 2,00 and 3,000 RPM’s. This happens whether I’m driving it at the moment or it’s sitting in park. Once that begins the car sputters and dies. After sitting for a short time (30 min - 1 hour) it will start and run fine for another 15 min to an hour before stalling out again the exact same way. Also, the check engine light does come on when it begins to act up but goes off between restarts. Any help would be appreciated.

damn nearly 500k? that's awesome!
before doing anything else, when was the air filter last changed?
then check the throttle body as there's a good chance it's all dirty, then the idle air control valve

The AFM is Air Flow Meter. Inside that is the IAT--Intake Air Temperature sensor. Sometimes it goes bad and wont show a code. On my old 93 if I had mine plugged in the RPM would go up way high. (Not sure exactly how high, but up there) When I unplugged it the car ran beautiful cuz it puts the ECU into limp mode. You could unplug the AFM and drive it to see if the problem still exists. Or you could pull the codes first, see if you get any. http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/intro/codereading.html Even if the light goes out it will still store old codes.
