I sent a message to PureDrifter asking him to change the dead link in his sticky to point to this thread.

thank you mr. kansas

i once referred to you as somewhat of a guru... a title which, at the time, you declined to accept, instead insisting you were just quite old. either way, does your deep wealth of LS information include the reason as to why the 2000 LS has (according to the documents) slightly worse performance and a smaller fuel tank than the 1998-1999 models?

Yeah! Or why the cd for the 1994 is actually slightly worse than the coefficient of drag for the 1990

Part of the answer can be found at http://www.lexls.com/info/lsgenerations.html : "ORVR (on-board refueling vapor recovery) system was added to the engine." This reduced the fuel tank capacity.

The reason for the slightly lower performance, if I remember correctly, was to allow the 2000 LS400 to be certified as an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle. The 1999 LS400 was a Transitional Low Emissions Vehicle. Edit: Obviously I'm wrong about this per the specifications that say that both the 1999 and 2000 LS400 were T-LEV. See! I don't know that much after all!

For further "amusement" here is a link to a 2000 LS400 sales brochure: http://www.auto-brochures.com/makes/...%20LS_2000.pdf

Again, the answer is somewhat documented at http://www.lexls.com/info/lsgenerations.html for the 1993 LS400:

"Side body molding thickness was increased and larger rocker moldings with body matching color."
"Larger 16" wheels with a new design."

Both the bulkier side moldings and going from skinny 205/65-15 tires to 225/60-16 tires increased wind resistance slightly.
