Checking around on price - Anyone know off hand what size the vacuum hoses are? First the little buggers all over the motor, (presume 4 or 5mm) and the brake booster vacuum hose (about 10mm)?
I used 1/2 inch rubber fuel line on my 98 brake booster and pcv valve
Thanks. The really small stuff is like new on my engine, its only the likes of the brake booster and pvc valve, and the middle size hose for the air control valve (power steering vacuum lines) that may need replacing.
Cool. I'll pickup some tomorrow.
Thanks again.
Important to get new screw clamps, too. I bought a pack of ten from the hardware store. And you will need to loop the PCV valve hose to make the bend, but it works. That will take more hose, so cut long rather than short, or back to the store for more hose for you.
Turns out my Vacuum hoses are a little loose too. replacing them tonight. Brake is just a little spongy will see what its like after vacuum lines replaced.
I had assumed I needed to replace the rubber hose lines to the calipers with steel braided ones, but this is cheaper and a better first step.
This bothers me a little. I want to make sure you know I only replaced the vacuum hose from the intake to the master cylinder. I did not replace brake lines to the actual brake calipers. you mentioned steel braided lines, and that makes me think you are replacing brake fluid lines. Do not replace brake lines with fuel hose.
LOL no. I was just mentioning steel braided brake lines cos thats what I've done in the past to correct spongy brakes when there did not appear to be any reason for the lack luster brake performance.
I realized you only played with the vacuum lines. I just replaced all of mine. In fact I've only just finished about 20 minutes ago. Just got back from a test run about 5 minutes ago. Unfortunately replacing the vacuum hoses did nothing for my motor or brakes, but at least they are now new and something I can cross off the list.
At the same time I have re-hooked up my heater and yesterday I got my Climate control cluster working again. I gotta replace the LCD. Its cactus. Have a new one coming. Till then I gotta guess the temperature I'm setting as the LCD shows nothing at all. Its completely blanked out.
I noticed I have 28 points from lowest temp to highest. Anyone able to tell me what the increments are and what the start and end points are?
Thanks for the tip. I just did my timing belt, water pump, cleaned injectors and swapped the oem fan for an electric oone. The brittle hoses and connectors fore sensors are a nightmare after 27 years.
I replaced and deleted vacuum hoses already but haven looked at the brake system
consider sending in your ecu for a rebuild. I did all the updates on my 99’ and out of the blew my ecu went out. It is a very common problem with ls400s. I got the ecu back and put it in my car and not only did it fix my over heating problems it completely made my car faster. It’s a whole new car now.
When I was changing the starter on y 99LS couple weeks ago, I changed 2 vacuum hoses that looked the worst. PCV hose and the grommet and one hose on the other side.
Careful pulling hoses off that black plastic box, you can break a hose nipple !!!
Here's hoping the starter on my LS400 lasts at least till I update to a later model. Apparently you need to get LOTS of seemingly unrelated things to replace the starter (ERG system, intake caskets, etc) and you should set aside the weekend to do it (with a auto store close by for extra hoses, clips, other incidentals)
All the best with your starters guys.
My 89 LS400 starter hasn't missed a beet yet (tough wood).
Its just several other things slowly going wrong now (Hey, it is 31 years old).
