99 LS400 Slack in steering column
Sorry if this is a repeat post or falls under a repair already out there. Is it normal for these cars to have slack up-down with the steering wheel. Everything works perfectly, I just noticed it when I raised my knee into the steering wheel, it will move up about an inch and then come right back down. In other words, if I can forcibly move the steering wheel up and when I let go, it rest back in original place. I was wondering if this was normal and maybe meant to give if you hit your leg when entering or exiting the vehicle? I test drove a 430 before I bought this one and it did the same thing except it had front end issues and had sloppy steering. My LS400 has tight steering, no shimmy, etc. Drives like it's brand new.
BTW, lucky find on this car. I bought it last year in Florida and it had 78k on it. Well off couple had it and kept it was always kept in a climate controlled garage, along with his restored cars(big garage). So grateful I found this car.
Thanks in advance!

I dont know too much about your year Lexus but no, that does not sound right. Does your electric column lower and raise still work?
It sounds like thats whats warn out. Common problem with all LSand fixable with only about 1/2 hour very easy work. There are plenty of threads here on it, and there's a youTube vid that shows you exactly what to do to fix it... free. Its just a matter of spacing out a worn cog so that it engages again.

He has used a cable tie to act as a spacer. I (and others here) have used 2 cable ties together so that there are 2 points of contact, not just one. It would be best to use a plastic or fibro washer but the average person probably wont have one the correct size on hand. Everyone has cable ties.
Hope this helps.

I had slack in my 2000 steering wheel after swapping an instrument cluster. The slack was up and down as well as left and right, and was from a bushings that fell apart during the repair. I reordered them and had them replaced and slack is gone. The part number was 9038910024. Image attached was where the bushings went on steering column assembly. I've learned that there is tons of great advice on these forums but nothing takes the place of a inexpensive trustworthy shop to help sort things out.

Thanks for the replies. I guess it must be that bushing. I saw some post about them, but it seemed that people had more problems associated. Everything with the tilt and column works great. Just the up and down slack. I'll have to wait until I get back down to FL to get up under the dash when I can put it on my dad's lift. I broke my neck 4 years ago and anything under the dash is almost impossible for me to get to. Working under the dash is a strain when you're healthy. I actually bought this car because of my neck. I needed the softest ride I could find and this car is perfect for that reason. These are nice cars for any reason! Thanks again for the replies.

Go figure.I sold my dodge truck and made the jeep a daily driver.Bouncy ride was killing wife,so we went for a soft riding car too.LS400 really bailed me out with that issue.
