Behavior of ls400
Hi community,
I just purchased a 2000 ls400 with 113,000 miles on it. I'm disappointed. It's not as quiet as I expected, doesn't ride very smooth which might be attributed to inferior shocks put on and all around drivability is clunky. I read rave reviews of the ls400 being silly smooth and quiet. What am I missing?

It sounds like one of those cars that was converted to a VIP and drug all over the road, then to sell it an attempt to return it to stock condition. Look under it and see if the whole underside is all scraped up.

It doesn't feel smooth. It rides hard, is all over the road, is not as quiet as I've heard it's supposed to be. It has Yokohama tires. That's the best I can describe.

I'd say there is something wrong with the one you purchased. Did you test drive before purchase. Pedigree of the vehicle and maintenance practices of the prior owner are important to know and understand to insure you get a good vehicle. Your description does not sound like any of the 3 that I've owned. At that age could need some suspension parts/bushings/struts/mounts, any number of things that have been neglected over the past 18 years. The low mileage sounds good though.

Clunky? Betting on bad front and rear sway bar bushings.
If there was some suspension work that was reversed, maybe something bad on the reinstall i.e. bad/incorrectly installed top hats?
Bad care/maintenance/parts unfortunately attribute to a bad ride. But on the plus side, it only has 113k miles

A number of Possibilities
Got my 1997 LS 400 at 75k miles, about 122k, the car was clunking in front end when going over bumps and dips. Lower Strut bars! (I got replacements from an online Toyota dealer) and they were a bear to replace as I had no U-tube videos to watch first.
Got rid of the clunk but still not smooth - so I replaced the strut cartridges (the KYB replacements were much LESS heavy duty that the originals)
Next, rear was thumping on bumps and I replaced the rear shocks too.
Front thumping still, so installed new upper control arms. (Aftermarket OEMs still not even close to heavy duty construction of originals.
Now, at 193k miles, not too bad. Pretty smooth ride. First thing is to get in that front end and inspect and look at all of the suspension components - they are too expensive to easter-egg, replacing things.
