Post What does your temp gauge display?

Ok I would like to just get an overview here. Ever since I bought my car my temp gauge has never gone above the 2/6 mark in my pic. I know it is within normal range but I still wonder...so what does your LS show? It is at 2/6 when it's warmed up, here's the pic so you know what I'm talking about.

mine usually lingers right around the middle, even when I'm driving crazy, or very normal. It seems weird that yours is that low. Every car I've had I've always seen the temp gauge around is always around the middle.

Mine is always in the middle and rarely goes above the middle point. Only when I drive hard and for along distance.

I've NEVER seen an LS at that point before. Is there some kind of aftermarket thermostat? (my only guess?)

BTW - Is your gauge cluster messed up? the lower left sidel ooks like it's been burned or something.

Mine is exactly half way at operating temp. Either your gauge is broken, or if the temperature is the actual temperature, and your engine is running at such a low temp all the time, then I bet you your emissions are sky high, and your fuel economy is terrible. A richer engine runs at lower temps. Check the thermostat, may even check the Oxygen sensors and your MAF sensor. My guess is that the gauge has gone bad. I have never seen an engine run at such low temps. Only higher.

I suspected that it should be running at the halfway point. I'm definitely going to get this taken care of soon. I was going to bring it to my mechanic soon anyway, man I'm not looking forward to the price tag for all the repairs coming up . Thanks for the input guys.

If your fuel economy is normal, and your emmissions are normal, just ignore the temp gauge. Don't worry about it.

My 91 is on the 2nd line always ,

I had a new water pump and T-stat
installed when I did my T-belt about
2 years ago. and I remained the same after that.

My 90 LS400 also runs at very low temperature. It is usually slightly above the 2nd line. Even in town, I have seen it right at the 2nd line, but there are times that it is between the 2nd and 3rd line. Just below the 3rd line is the highest I have seen my temp gauge. One good thing is that I have heard a cooler running engine will typically last longer.

Interesting about the comment about the economy and "richness" of the engine. Upon startup in the morning, my car puts out a "gassy" smelling smoke. It smells almost exactly like gasoline. Then it goes away after a couple of minutes. I have also noticed low economy. I have about 120 miles on my odometer since fill-up and if I recall, it is just below the 1/2 way mark. Is this poor economy?

Thanks.

Post mine is just above the 2nd line too

Mine is at about the same point yours is, Earl, maybe just a touch higher - never up to halfway. It was there before the water pump / timing belt / thermostat swap, and it is at the same point now. My car runs a bit rich at first, but I still get about 19 mpg in town, 25 or so on the highway, so economy looks great to me.
