My 1996 LS400 has an idleing problem. When I start the car sometimes the engine goes into revving mode. Can someone help me please.

I had a similar issue with mine. My car would act normal until it was idle. It will then would rev up and down and would keep on revving until I moved again. I took it to my mechanic and he said it was the idle control valve. It is expensive new $500+ when I looked so I went on eBay found one for a good price. They put it in and bam issue was fixed

I believe the part# was 22270-50020. Hope this helps

The good thing about having a car with OBD2 is you can, have it scanned, or get a scan tool that will read real time. Not a code reader. The best thing to do is have a good outfit with a quality 2 way scan tool (bidirectional) check it out. Then its not so much a guessing and parts swapping game. The tool should be able to run the various valves and check the various sensors, to see what affects the abnormal operation. Those scan tools are not cheap and run anywhere from $1000. to $10,000.

Is it only on start? Does it calm down after a couple of minutes?

Go buy a maxi das from harbor freight, and then you can operate the idle control system and see if that's the problem. Then operate the egr system. Read fuel trims etc.

Have any codes read and let us know. Some suspicions though any codes or absence of them relays a starting point for us.
