The high pressure power steering hose seems to be leaking on my 96 LS. I searched but there is not a lot of info regarding changing out this part. Has anybody done it recently and have any tricks to share? Also, I don't plan on getting the line from the dealer. I will either take the hose to a shop and have a new one constructed or buy a cheap one off ebay.

Also, many of the lines online seem to not include the lower banjo fitting--where it connects to the rack. The new line seems to simply thread on to the lower steel banjo portion. I don't see any reason to switch out that old steel lower portion if it's not leaking..

Local indy shop want $180 labor to R/R the line. Thanks for any advice!

 

I believe you can order a high pressure hose from Rock auto for less than $40, someone correct me if I'm wrong. I have also removed and installed mines twice when I replaced my pump and rack, its not that hard at all if you're mechanical. If you are trying to do this yourself I can post a quick tutorial on how to.

 

I bought a cheap one off ebay (about 2009) and it is so simple I cant believe you are asking?? disconnect from pump, take out one pan bolt (holds the elbow in place) and disconnect at the rack. it is all over..

 

Thanks for the information. Billy, several people said the pump was very easy to remove as well, just two bolts and a nut!

However, those bolts were extremely difficult to access, so yeah, that's why I ask people that may have already performed this installation.

Any advice on replacing the lower banjo or just connect the new hose at the Union? Several posts reported the lower banjo is in an extremely tight location. Thanks for the info!

 

I went to the banjo, it came with a new wave washer to seal it

I bought the cheap ebay hose and it worked fine. It was a tight install at both ends though and I have a lift. I did the rack also, got that from Rock Auto. It works good too.

 

Just pulled one off my mom's 95 and took it to a hydraulics shop and had them rebuild it... I think the key to the install it to connect the rack portion first and then connect to the pump. Seemed to make it easier. Did it with jack stands on the floor. Not my preferred maintenance activity, but doable.

 

Sorry to hijack this thread but I recently changed the oil on my 96 and I noticed the driver side steering rack boot looked covered in some kind of oil. I didn't have time to check to see if was steering fluid or not but it seems likely. I have heard that Toyota's are a bit notorious about the high pressure hose going - is this a correct assumption here? The passenger side seemed fine. I wasn't sure how the high pressure hose was routed - hopefully over the driver's side. Thanks in advance.

 

The most pain in the **** on the whole thing is transferring the two standoffs from the old hose to the new one. I just did this on my 96 ls400. Jack stands help a lot. I've done three power steering hose change-outs this
year and this hose is the only one that didn't have the standoffs already on the new hose.
