Default 1999 LS400 Starter rebuild

Hey guys I've searched and searched and I keep finding the same info where people say that you can just replace the contacts and the plunger on the starter. However, no one has posted any part numbers, except DeLorean00 on this thread https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...roblems-2.html which is for his 1999 GS400. Considering that they both use the same engine I am coming to the conclusion that the parts will work the same for the starter on the 1999 LS400.

Item: Starter Kit (contact) Part Number: 28226-72010 List: $13.80 Shop Price: $11.20

Item: Contact Part Number: 28226-54412 List: $7.00 Shop Price: $5.95

Item: Plunger Part Number: 28235-54380 List: $26.58 Shop Price: $22.59

Can anyone verify? I've called both Lexus and Toyota dealers and none of them can give me a conclusive answer. Thanks in advance.

Will rebuilding starter always guarantee a working starter at the end? I mean is the problem always the parts that you listed?

The guarantee depends on what parts are worn out. I would estimate that 9/10 times it's the solenoid contacts. It could also be worn brushes, armature, starter drive, etc.

Before you go thru the trouble of installing the intake manifold, etc., you can test the rebuilt starter by:
  1. Mounting the starter.
  2. Connecting the starter wiring.
  3. Remove the Fuel Pump Relay.
  4. Connect the battery.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to START and see if the starter cranks the engine.
I did this test when I replaced the starter last April (I just installed a Denso rebuild from RA). Yeah, I didn't feel like risking having to disassemble the engine a second time because of a wonky starter either.

Rebuilding a starter is not worth the trouble unless you can't buy a reman. Especially on the LS unless you love spending hours tearing the top of the engine apart.

It's an 8 or 10 hour job to replace right? You have to take the whole intake manifold as it's right in the V bank of the engine.

Not uncommon for them to fail though. My car had it's replaced by the previous owner. Dealership charged them $1300 in I think 2014 or 2015. Can only imagine that would be $2000 today.

Someone on another forum posted that the book labor is 14 hours (for a VVTi engine). My experience confirms this.

I found this Denso reman on Amazon. Crossing fingers that it’s actually good. I found this Denso reman on Amazon. Crossing fingers that it’s actually good.

I also got two intake gaskets, four coolant crossover gaskets, one coolant temperature sensor, and some coolant. Anything else I’m missing?

14 hours is somewhat insane. It takes 90 minutes or less to pull the manifold off, then it's a matter of the crossover, loosening the harness, and then addressing the admittedly PITA starter bolts. But any mechanic who's done this at least once would take a fraction of 14 hours to do this job.

You can get remans from the dealer pretty cheap.
