93 LS400 PS pump arc'd against alternator
We did something stupid today and forgot to unhook the battery before replacing the PS pump.
At one point the pump came in contact with the alternator and I heard a 'tick' and then smelled it. Obviously I was concerned but finished the PS job and hoped everything would be fine.
Now it won't start. We had some smarter guys than me looking at it checking relays and things. At one point they sprayed some starting fluid and it started so we think it is a fuel problem but we aren't sure.
Does anyone have thoughts on what could potentially have happened? I am assuming that it could be a long list...

You did not mention checking the fuses. I think the fusible links especially need attention. It is possible for them to fail but look OK to the eye. A wiring diagram would also be of help to you.
Since it does start with spray fluid, it would indicate a fuel-related problem - injectors, etc.

Don't worry too much. Check the fuse named "Electronics IG" in the fuse box under the hood. Other than this, the fuse "120A ALT" may be blown too.

Can you help with what a fuseable link looks like? Is it a wire or a plastic block that plugs in? I am not strong when it comes to electrical stuff. I can't find a fuse labeled 'electronics- IG'. I did find 'ECU-IG' under the dash and it checks out.

Well...it turns out that the arc didn't end up causing the problem. It was in fact a fuel problem. The fuel pump decided to crap out with impeccable timing. My father-in-law's wheels are rolling again.
Thanks for the advice!

Did the fuel pump go when your temperatures were way into the freezing area? Not saying its for sure the cause but if water is present you never know. How many miles on the car?

Not sure on the mileage...probably in the 150k range. I say probably because his instrument cluster was out for quite a while. I didn't realize it but the car had been sitting for a month or two waiting for someone (me) to come and replace the PS pump and we certainly did have an arctic blast during the time that it was sitting. It had a loud pump bearing and was sucking fluid thru the ACV valve like anything. I've never seen a car smoke like that, except maybe an 80s dodge caravan!
The funny thing is that it started and drove to a shop before the PS repair.
